National Road Safety Week 2025

Friday, 9 May 2025

National Road Safety Week returns on 11 to 18 May to shine a spotlight on the importance of safer roads.

The week aims to honour the lives lost on our roads and promote actions to help prevent further tragedy.

Every year, more than 1,300 people lose their lives and another 44,000 are seriously injured on Australian roads. We all play an important role to make our roads safer.

How you can get involved

There are many ways to support National Road Safety Week and play your part in creating safer roads:

  • Make the pledge: commit to “drive, so others survive” and share the message with your community.
  • Test your knowledge: take part in the road safety quiz to sharpen your awareness of safe driving practices.

Road safety initiatives in South Australia

Our vision to achieve zero lives lost by 2050

The state government is working towards a bold vision – zero lives lost on South Australian roads by 2050. As part of the state’s Road Safety Strategy to 2031, South Australia is aiming for a:

  • 50% reduction in road deaths
  • 30% reduction in serious injuries by 2030.

The strategy outlines principles and priorities for improving road safety in South Australia. The annual action plans translate these priorities into real-world initiatives.

Road Safety Action Plan 2025–2027

The latest action plan includes 84 actions and performance indicators designed to reduce road trauma. These initiatives are built on evidence-based strategies and community feedback.

Road Safety Program

We are delivering road safety upgrades and improvements on:

  • remote
  • regional
  • urban roads
  • footpaths
  • cycle paths.

The $168 million program is funded by the Australian (50%) and South Australian (50%) governments over three years.

40 km/h school speed limits

We are introducing a 40km/h time-based school speed limit near schools on busy roads. This will improve children’s safety and help them when they travel to and from school. This project is part funded by the $168 million Road Safety Program and the $2.6 million budgeted for road safety as part of the 2024–25 State Budget.

Achievements in 2024

Last year marked several milestones in South Australia's road safety journey:

Together, we can make our roads safer for everyone. Let’s make every journey count – safely.
